Why should I insulate the pipes in my home?

Insulate your pipes so the heat stays inside (where it belongs) and so hot water gets to you more quickly and effectively. When a water heater is doing nothing, the heat radiating from it reduces the heat of the water inside. The thermostat needs to switch the heater on to heat up the water, and the cycle continues. This is called "standby" heat loss.

Another cold water pipe you might want to insulate is the water service entry pipe. The incoming water is very cold in winter, and insulation will prevent humidity from causing condensation to form on the pipe.

In conclusion, insulating your pipes does make economic sense. The benefits include, the fact that the hot water in the pipes will remain warm longer between uses than without insulation (which is much cheaper than installing and operating a hot water recirculation pump), and that the sounds from the pipes expanding and contracting with changes in temperature will be decreased, due to slower heat loss.

Why should I insulate the boiler pipes in my home?

Pipe insulation cover the exposed pipes between your hot water cylinder and boiler, reducing the amount of heat lost and therefore keeping your water hotter for longer. Fiberglass insulation is made especially for pipe and boiler applications and can be used on boiler piping insulation with temperature ranges from -20 degrees Fahrenheit up to +500 degrees Fahrenheit, which covers the range of temperatures. Fiberglass insulation will make the best type of insulation for either steam or hot water boiler piping.
